TIPS TO SAFELY GIVE AND RECEIVE GIFT CARDS

Tips to Safely Give and Receive Gift Cards

Gift cards are a great way to send a gift that the recipient can choose on their own. If you receive a gift card, it’s fun to shop for that “special something” for yourself. Be a smart gift card user and follow these tips:

  • Buy gift cards that are kept behind the counter or near a checkout lane. Scammers are less likely to open packaging to scan a bar code to steal the card information.
  • Be wary of cards sold on online auction sites or people offering to trade them. These cards could be counterfeit or the card value could be a lot less than they claim it is.
  • If you resell a gift card, make sure you get paid before you give the buyer the card’s PIN.
  • If you receive a gift card, register it with the merchant online or by calling the number on the back of the card. Report a lost or stolen card; the merchant might be able to block it from being used and send you a new one.

Plus, be aware of gift card scams like these:

  • Phishing emails or texts claiming you’ve won a gift card. Don’t click on any links or download attachments and delete the message.
  • Don’t give your personal information when buying a gift card or if someone asks for it claim a gift card prize.
  • Ignore demands to pay for utility services with a gift card. Threats of a fine or service suspension are scams.

Follow these tips and enjoy the fun and convenience of giving and receiving gift cards.
