MAINTAIN YOUR PRIVACY ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Maintain Your Privacy on Social Media

Social media is all about sharing, connecting with friends, meeting new people and interacting with your favorite brands. Just remember you don't have to share everything about yourself. In fact, the less you share, the safer your social media experience might be because giving out too much information can put you at risk for identity theft, unwanted solicitations and other crimes such as burglary or stalking.

Here are some tips to protect yourself and your personal information on social media.

  • You don't need to answer every question when setting up a social media profile. Answer only required questions.
  • Make sure your password isn't easy to guess. Use different passwords from site to site and don't share them with anyone. Carefully consider limiting who can view your posts. Share only with people you know and trust.
  • Never post your bank account information, Social Security Number, password, address, personal phone numbers or other private information. Your friends and family already have this information if they need it. If you want to share your birthday, post just the day and month but not the year. You'll still get plenty of birthday wishes while reducing your risk of identity theft.
  • Post vacation photos after you’re home. While you’re away, keep your daily routine vague. Do you really want everyone, including would-be thieves, to know when you're not at home?
  • Read the privacy policy. It will help you understand how a social media platform uses your information and what your rights are if your information is compromised.

Follow these helpful tips and enjoy a fun, safe and private social media experience.
